There's always been a rainbow hanging over your head

Good morning! At the time of writing, it is 8.30am here in Melbourne. I like writing blog posts on Saturday mornings so I can reflect on the week and prior weekend that has passed.

Last Saturday, I had a major chocolate eclair craving and decided to try making some myself. I used a profiterole recipe for the dough and it turned out great!

On Sunday, we had a BBQ with friends and family at a park in Geelong. Everyone made some food and brought it and we had a fun time catching up. I have many fond memories of Christmas Eves spent all together at our house when I was growing up. This is our annual January gathering to celebrate many in this group who have a birthday in January.

Here's my best friend since childhood, Renee. I loved her blue stripy jumper that her mum knitted and her pink hair that she dyed for breast cancer awareness. I love catching up with you, Ney! (Xxx)

At some point, we decided to go for a walk around the river to digest the delicious food we'd indulged in.

A sign warned 'beware of snakes' although all we spotted were some beautiful ducks and large, white pelicans.

Mum and I forgot to take some outfit photos so we took them in the backyard when we got home. Mum wore her gorgeous floral dress that she made herself. I wore a midi dress and wicker platforms, both bought at a secondhand market. The shoes were in brand new condition and I happily handed over my $5 a few weeks ago. This stripey dress was originally mum's but I recently swapped four of my shirts with her for this dress.

Before leaving the park, the girls organised our next gathering: either a paint and sip, or they'd like to come along to the market with mum and I. Either way, we always have a nice time together.

A rainbow greeted us yesterday morning.

Thank you for your well wishes on last week's blog post. I always get nervous before the new school year starts as I worry that I've forgotten the many strategies that teachers use to ensure lessons run smoothly and students are settled. Of course, my students are still as lovely as ever and are happy to be back at school. Yesterday was an interesting day as severe storms and flash flooding was expected. The school gave parents the choice to pick their children up early. We kept the students indoors and were flabbergasted that it was gloriously sunny at one point and the storm never did arrive. Regardless, I only had 8 students in my classroom by the end of the day which was an incredibly unique teaching experience.

Hope your week has been great.

X

  1. AS I read this it is 8.20am on Saturday morning although some hours after you posted!
What a pleasure it is to see friends socialising in the sun. We can only dream of that at the moment.
I love your stripey dress and what a fabulous relationship you have with your mum. X

    1. Thank you, hun. Don't worry, you'll get there, eventually at least. Are you in lockdown at the moment? X

  2. You and your mum always looks so glam Jess, but your mum's made dress and hair flowers are BRILLIANT. (My mam and I usually look like a right pair of pillocks, especially when we accidentally wear our matching jumpers!) Your bestie's hair is total rock, love it. So nice to see you all having fun in the park, and what a beautiful park it is too. Those eclairs look divine. Glad your first week back was good and that the storm didn't arrive. Lulu xXx

    1. Thank you dear Lulu. Yes, mum made an impressive amount of clothes during last year's 2 lockdown periods. All lovely, I must add.

My friend Renee is gorgeous, yes, and kind and smart too. Adore her! X

  3. I can't believe you actually made those chocolate eclairs, Jess! It's clear you inherited your Mum's talent! Your get-together looks and sounds like the stuff of dreams - well, we can only dream about such things here. You and your Mum are looking fabulous as always, and I'm glad your return to the classroom was a good one! xxx

    1. Thank you Ann!! I used mum's recipe to make profiterole dough, but made the eclairs longer. X

  4. Well done with the eclairs. You need to add Paris Brest to your repertoire next, it's a proper showstopper (in a past life I was a trained pastry chef - shame I don't like sweet things!)

Your mum's dress is fab, isn't she clever?

It seems so weird seeing get togethers like yours, I don't even think I could handle a crowd of people any more! xxx

    1. Thanks Vix. It does feel strange. But I'm glad that we were outdoors and spread apart when eating. X

  5. Wow, your eclairs look amazing! I love seeing the pictures of your gathering, although yeah, it feels really weird to me! Still not allowed to gather here.

I love your stripey dress, Jess!

    1. Thanks Shiela. We've had 2 long lockdowns so it's great that the number of Cobid cases is really low now. X
